Hilltoppers make it three-straight with doubleheader sweep of Newman

Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – WES KOENIG was 4-for-6, scoring two runs and driving in two more to lead St. Edward's to a doubleheader sweep of Newman Friday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Hilltoppers won a pitcher's duel in game one, 2-1, and then outhit the Jets in game two for a 8-4 victory.
 
St. Edward's (19-9, 6-5 HC) opened the first game with a run in the first inning. CUTTER RUNTE doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning. A groundout moved Runte to third base, and he would score on a sacrifice lineout from Koenig.
 
The Hilltoppers would add a run in the fourth inning when KEVIN MAYO led off with a single. After a sacrifice bunt and groundout moved Mayo to third, Whitacre came through with the clutch single to put St. Edward's up 2-0.
 
Newman (12-10, 5-6 HC) got a run back in the top of the fifth inning when it scored an unearned run after a two-out error by the Hilltoppers.
 
Hilltopper starting pitcher BRANNON EASTERLING (4-4) would shut the Jets down from there on out. The righthander would get his eighth complete game of the season, allowing six hits, while striking out seven batters. He lowers his team-best ERA to 1.09.
 
In game two, the Hilltoppers again got started in the first inning. This time the home team piled on four runs to start the contest. Both, Koenig and RANSOM LALONDE drove in a run, and A.J. Hermanson laced a two-RBI double to the gap in left field.
 
DYLAN WATTS would make it 6-0 in the second inning when he doubled home two run down the left field line.
 
Newman got a run back in the fourth inning, but St. Edward's answered in the bottom half of the inning when Koenig doubled home Whitacre to make it, 7-1.
 
The Jets would not go quietly as they plated two runs in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 7-3.
 
Hilltopper starter COLLIN SHERROD (5-0) allowed three runs on four hits, while walking three and striking out four in 5.0 innings of work.
 
Reliever KYLE SEITHEL come on and was outstanding. The senior allowed one run on three hits, while walking two and striking out three in 4.0 innings of relief to pick up his first save of the season.
 
The two teams will meet for the final game of the three-game series on Saturday.  First-pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Lucian-Hamilton Field.  Live video and stats will be provided on the Hilltopper Athletic Website.
