AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward's Women's Tennis team recognized its five seniors Saturday afternoon at the Strohmeyer Tennis Courts.
The Hilltoppers honored
SUMMER BIGGS,
FRANCESCA CHAHER,
BROOKE HUGHES,
RAFAELA HAEGELE and
SASHA KHADZHYAN prior to their contest with Our Lady of the Lake. The match was suspended due to the Saints only having three players available.
The three singles matches saw
IVANA ZECEVIC defeated Andrea Figueroa 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot.
MARISSA WILLIAMS and
VANESSA CAMARA each won their match by scores of 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 and No. 3 spot, respectively.
Head Coach Kendall Brooks shared her thoughts about her group of seniors and what they've meant to the program:
"They really are a great group of girls. I was really lucky to come to St. Edward's two years ago and they welcomed me, trusted me and helped me lead the team. They're not only really good tennis players but truly great people as well. We've brought in some new people along the way but our seniors have shown great leadership, brought tons of energy each day, and they're a tough group to lose. We're definitely going to miss them going forward."
Brooks reiterated that there is still a great deal of work to do going forward. "We still have some tough matches left. We have to go on the road to Cameron and Midwestern State who are ranked two and three in our region. It's a chance for us to increase our ranking a bit and achieve our goal we made at the start of the season to make the regionals. Personally, I think we're going to do great."
St. Edward's will travel to Lawton, Oklahoma to take on Cameron this Thursday. First-serve is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. from the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex.
