SAN ANTONIO, Texas – St. Edward's University Men's and Women's Tennis pushed to a strong finish on day two of their fall opener at Trinity University, producing five individual champions and a pair of doubles champions.
Â
For the men it was
RICARDO PINEDA,
CHARLIE SHIN, Mateus de Col, and
CHASE MOREHOUSE all going undefeated to win their brackets. The doubles team of
MAXIMO AGOGLIA and Shin also remained perfect on the weekend to take flight two of doubles.
Â
"We definitely had a strong showing for the program this weekend. I'm very pleased with what I saw and I think we are already moving in the right direction," said men's head coach Estevam Strecker. "I was very impressed with the new guys and I think they are a great fit to where I want to take the program. The returners continue to improve and that's also a good sign. We have a lot of work still ahead of us, but I'm proud of where we are right now."
Â
On the women's side
MARISSA WILLIAMS swept her competition on the weekend to win her bracket and
IVANA ZECEVIC with
LAURA GALVAN also went undefeated in doubles play. While some matches were cut short by time constraints,
ANJALI SAMPATH,
PAOLA CARPIO,
VANESSA CAMARA and Zecevic also collected wins in singles play as well.
Â
"I think this was a good weekend for us. We finished day two with some solid performances," said women's head coach Kendall Brooks. "I was happy to see Marissa playing some good tennis and winning her round robin, and Ivana showing her competitive fire as well. I thought our doubles was solid, considering it was our first outing as partners with Ivana and Laura going undefeated in their group. Overall we came away with good experience and lots to continue working on to prepare for next weekend's tournament."
Â
Next weekend both teams are slated to take the court at Midwestern State, starting on Friday in Wichita Falls, Texas. The men and women are both on Twitter and Facebook. Fans can also find updates at GoHilltoppers.com.Â
