Box ScoreWACO, Texas – After dropping two matches last week, St. Edward's Men's Tennis bounced back in a big way on Monday, taking down Colorado Mesa, 9-0.
The Hilltoppers' win was definitive, with only one match going three sets.
JARED FELLOWS and
MATEUS DELLAVACHIA DE COL combined to surrender just two games in their singles matchups. De Col is now 7-2 in his last 10 singles appearances, and 9-5 on the season. The freshman also teamed up with
LOGAN BUIGNET in doubles to win their fifth-straight match.
As a team, the Hilltoppers are now 7-8 overall, and 3-1 in the region. The Mavericks fall to 9-7 with the loss.
"I'm happy with today's result. We came out and took care of business, and that's what it's all about," said head coach Estevam Strecker. "It is always good to get a win, and we should enjoy this one. We still have things to work on, but right now we should enjoy the win. We are taking a couple of days off and regrouping. Then, we are refocusing for the last part of the season. There is still a lot of tennis to be played, and we need to stay focused."
RICARDO PINEDA and
CHARLIE SHIN scored the first point of the match with a win at No. 1 doubles, 8-4. De Col and Buignet made it 2-0 with their 8-3 win at No. 3. Fellows and Agoglia went all the way to a tiebreaker, but came out on top, 7-4 to complete the sweep.
In singles, it was a race between de Col and Fellows for who could win the fourth point of the contest. De Col finished first at No. 5, winning 6-1, 6-0, but Fellows followed right behind at No. 6 with the same score to clinch the victory. Pineda rolled, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1, and Shin went 6-3, 6-3 in the second spot. Agoglia needed seven games to win his first set, but got the win with a 6-2 second. Buignet went the distance at No. 4, 6-1, 1-6, 10-6, to wrap up the shutout.
Coach Strecker and his team get a week off before returning to the Strohmeyer Varsity Courts for a home match against Nebraska-Kearney next Monday. Play is currently scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with live stats available at GoHilltoppers.com.
