LAREDO, Texas – The offense for St. Edward's Baseball saved the day again with six runs on 14 hits as the Hilltoppers defeated Texas A&M-International, 6-4, on Saturday afternoon.
WESLEY HARRIS and
ROMEO CORTINA both collected three hits for the Hilltoppers.
J.D. ARROWOOD also turned in two hits, including a triple. Arrowood drove in two runs while scoring twice. Harris also came across the place two times.
On the mound,
COLLIN SHERROD earned his eighth win of the season with five innings of scoreless work. He also struck out nine on the way to an 8-1 record.
The Hilltoppers are now 37-10 overall with a commanding three-game lead in the Heartland Conference at 20-4. TAMU-International is now 16-29 and 7-17.
"You have to give Texas A&M-International credit. They fought back today when a lot of things didn't go their way this weekend," said head coach Rob Penders. "We got the win again because our guys executed at a high level. We did very well offensively, hitting a lot of balls hard today. It was great to see Collin out there again, performing at his normal level. We made some great defensive plays to keep them off the board, and our bullpen did its job. We look forward to finishing the regular season at home next weekend."
A two-run lead to start the first gave St. Edward's the advantage it needed. Arrowood's triple brought in Harris, and Cortina singled to plate Arrowood.
Another run in the third off of the bat of
DYLAN WATTS gave the Hilltoppers a 3-0 advantage. Then, in the fourth,
GABLE WHITACRE drove in Cortina to make it 4-0.
A pair of insurance runs in the sixth and the eighth were much needed. The Dustdevils scored one in the seventh, and mounted a three-run rally in the ninth to make it 6-4. However it was not enough.
Coach Penders and his team return to Lucian-Hamilton field next weekend for a three-game series against Newman. A doubleheader opens the affair on Friday with a single game on Saturday to close the regular season. Live stats and video will be available at GoHilltoppers.com.
