AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's senior pitcher CAMERON STANTON was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 30th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Stanton was taken as the 889th pick in the 2016 draft.

The right-handed hurler had an outstanding season in his final campaign with the Hilltoppers. His 17 starts ranked second in the country, and 10 wins came in a tie for 15th in the nation. Stanton finished the year with a record of 10-1, and an earned-run average of 3.16. He helped St. Edward's to a record-setting 46 wins, and an appearance in the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament Championship game.

"It feels surreal. Like a dream," said Stanton. "Getting the chance to continue playing the sport I love, and have worked so hard for all these years is awesome. I have to say thank you to all my teammates, coaches, and the people at St. Edward's for the opportunity to play for the last four years. This is truly a dream come true.

The Magnolia, Texas native is the 14th player from St. Edward's to be drafted in its storied history. This is the fifth-straight year the Hilltoppers have had a player selected as J.D. ARROWOOD was taken in 2015, Brannon Easterling in 2014, Taylor Johnson in 2013, and Stephen Johnson in 2012.

"We are extremely proud and excited for Cam and his family," said St. Edward's head coach Rob Penders. "It is quite an honor to be drafted into professional baseball. He's consistently improved during his career at St. Edward's and I know he will continue on that path. He will represent St. Edward's well."

Stanton is just one of two players from the Heartland Conference to be drafted as Tyler Bugner from Newman was also taken, a 21st-round pick by the Colorado Rockies. Stanton follows in the footsteps of his father, Mike Stanton, who pitched around the major leagues from 1989-07. The elder Stanton also has three World Series rings to his name, and holds the record for career holds as a relief pitcher.
