Power Surges in Doubleheader Sweep of Lions

Hilltoppers hit six home runs in 10-3, 8-3 victories over UA Fort Smith

AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's baseball hit six home runs Friday in it's doubleheader sweep of UA Fort Smith, winning game one, 10-3, and game two, 8-3.
 
BLAKE ALEXANDER finished his day slugging 1.571 with two home runs and a triple, while scoring two runs and driving in five. GABLE WHITACRE went 3-for-6 in two games with four runs and three RBI on two doubles and a home run. WILLIAM HAIRSTON, TJ GISELBACH, and HUNTER COURSON also hit home runs for the Hilltoppers.
 
On the mound, BRANDON BOONE and STUART SPRINGER collected the starts and the wins. Boone went five innings with four strikeouts while Springer pitched seven innings with seven strikeouts.
 
St. Edward's (17-8, 5-0 Heartland) is now on a five-game winning streak. UA Fort Smith (11-12, 3-2) suffered its first two losses in conference play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One (St. Edward's 10, UA Fort Smith 3)
W – Boone (5-1) L – Harvey (2-3)
  • UA Fort Smith opened the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the second inning.
  • Courson responded for St. Edward's with a two-run home run in the bottom half of the second inning to make it 2-1.
  • The Hilltoppers extended their lead to 5-1 with three runs in the bottom of the third inning.
  • Whitacre and Alexander hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
 
Game Two (St. Edward's 8, UA Fort Smith 3)
W – Springer (4-0) L – Dodd (3-2)
  • Alexander put St. Edward's ahead, 2-0, with a two-run triple in the opening frame.
  • CARSON COX and ROMEO CORTINA made it 4-0 with RBI singles in the bottom of the second inning.
  • The Lions scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull with two.
  • Alexander and Giselbach made it 6-2 with a pair of home runs in the fifth inning.
  • St. Edward's collected some final insurance with single runs in the sixth and eighth frames.
 
HILLTOPPER NOTES
  • St. Edward's last 5-0 start in Heartland Conference play came in 2011.
  • The Hilltoppers have won 15 straight games against the Lions and are 24-7 in the all-time series.
  • Alexander has reached base in 18 straight games.
  • Whitacre is tied for the conference lead with seven home runs this season.
