Senior Duo Leads Doubleheader Sweep of Newman

Hilltoppers down Jets, 7-6 in game one, and 5-1 in game two

WICHITA, Kan. – The senior duo of GABLE WHITACRE and STUART SPRINGER helped St. Edward's baseball sweep Newman Thursday in its first Heartland Conference doubleheader of the season.
 
Whitacre went 3-for-7 and scored three runs on the day. He also drove in the game-winning run in game one with his third triple of the season. Springer pitched an eight-inning gem in game two, allowing one run on six hits with five strikeouts.
 
St. Edward's (14-8, 2-0 Heartland) breaks a three-game skid with the victories. Newman (6-11, 0-2 Heartland) has lost five of its last six games.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One (St. Edward's 7, Newman 6)
W – Weaver (2-0) L – Riney (1-2) S – Chupik (1)
  • Newman used a five-run fifth inning to eliminate a 4-0, St. Edward's advantage.
  • Another Jets' run in the sixth frame made it 6-4.
  • The Hilltoppers rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh, capped by Whitacre's RBI-triple to retake the lead.
  • JOSIAH CHUPIK retired three straight batters in the bottom of the frame for the save.
 
Game Two (St. Edward's 5, Newman 1)
W – Springer (3-0) L –Cannady (0-2)
  • After two shutout innings of play, St. Edward's jumped ahead 2-0 with single runs in the third and fourth frames.
  • The Hilltoppers added three runs of insurance in the sixth and seventh innings.
  • Newman broke the shutout in the eighth, but could not muster more than a single run.
 
HILLTOPPER NOTES
  • St. Edward's pitchers held Newman hitters to a .172 batting average.
  • The Hilltoppers have won five straight against the Jets, and are 37-14 in the all-time series.
  • BLAKE ALEXANDER has reached base in 15 straight games.
