AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward's softball swept its doubleheader Saturday against Texas A&M-International to gain a share of first place in the Heartland Conference standings. The Hilltoppers won by scores of 7-2 and 1-0.
St. Edward's (17-24, 9-3 Heartland) moves into a tie for first place in the league standings with the three-game sweep of TAMU-International (13-25, 7-5 Heartland). The Dustdevils drop to fourth place in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1: St. Edward's 7, TAMU-International 2)
W-Rex (4-10), L-Caterson (4-6)
- St. Edward's started the scoring in the third inning as they batted around the order, tallying five hits and pushing across six runs.
- Starting pitcher ASHLEE REX scattered eight hits through the first six innings, allowing just two unearned runs to score for the Dustdevils.
- St. Edward's added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning for the final margin.
- Rex retired TAMU-International in order in the seventh, including two strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2: St. Edward's 1, TAMU-International 0)
W-Slatten (8-8), L-Thompson (8-11)
- Game two turned into a pitcher's duel, with both hurlers matching each other pitch-for-pitch.
- St. Edward's scored the only run of the game in the third inning when JINNY STRICKLIN reached on a one-out walk.
- After moving to second on a groundout, Stricklin came in to score on a RBI-single by BREAH WHITTEN.
- That is all Hilltopper starting pitcher LAUREN SLATTEN needed as the senior allowed only two hits with four strikeouts in the victory.
HILLTOPPER NOTES
- Slatten has won four of her last five starts and has posted 34 strikeouts in 32 innings of work.
- St. Edward's swept its second Heartland Conference foe, as they also took three games from Oklahoma Panhandle earlier this season.
- SAMI WILLIAMS finished the three-game series going 4-for-8.
- MELINA SANCHEZ has reached base in six straight games
- St. Edward's extends its lead in the all-time series, 31-13.
