THE RUNDOWN
LUBBOCK, Texas – After a rally that fell short 7-6 in game one, the St. Edward's baseball team exploded in game two as they run-ruled Lubbock Christian 12-2 in seven innings Friday evening at Hays Field.
WILLIAM HAIRSTON led the way for the Hilltoppers with a .750 batting average (6-of-8), had three extra base hits including his sixth home run on the season, four RBIs and three runs scored. Hairston also achieved his 100
th career hit with St. Edward's in game two.
Â
The Chaps (14-6) put together back-to-back two-run innings in the third and fourth to build a 4-0 lead and was ahead 7-2 entering the seventh stanza of game one. The Hilltoppers (11-8) would make things interesting though, scoring four runs on five hits highlighted by a two-run dinger by Hairston to bring SEU within one run, 7-6. Unfortunately that is where the rally would end after a routine 4-3 play with two runners on made it final in favor of the home team.
Â
JUAN CORTINA (2-3) started on the bump and registered eight punch-outs in five innings.
CHRIS LOGAN relieved the ace for one inning where he had one strikeout. LCU's Ryan Johnson (3-1) got the win after tossing 4.2 innings with three strikeouts and three hits, and Shandon Herrera would get his first save of the season after recording the final out.
Â
Lubbock Christian struck first again in game two with one run in the opening inning, but St. Edward's responded with three runs in the second, and blew the game open with a five-run outing in the fourth on just two hits to take a comfortable 8-1 lead. The Hilltoppers coasted from there, finishing off the Chaps 12-2 in seven innings.
Â
COOPER BAILEY started the game on the mound and put in  2.2 innings of work with two strikeouts.
BLAKE HOLUBÂ (2-1) had a day on the rubber, pitching 4.1 innings and recorded a new career single-game high of six strikeouts, handing just out one free pass and one hit in his second career win.
