THE RUNDOWN
CANYON, Texas –
The St. Edward's baseball team's season came to a close Saturday as they were edged by No. 9 Colorado Mesa, 8-7 with a walk-off double from CMU's Zach McLeod in the 12th inning of the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament at Wilder Park. Senior outfielder WILLIAM HAIRSTON was a double shy of eclipsing the cycle as he went 3-for-5 at the plate, recorded a game-high three RBIs and scored two runs, including his second homer in the regional tournament. ROBBIE LAMMONS logged two hits and two ribbies, while senior reliever JAKE DAVIS put up 6.2 innings of work with a career-high seven strikeouts.

Down to their final three outs in the ninth with the score in favor of the Mavericks (42-15), 7-4, pinch hitter ZACH SHEPHERD drew a walk for the Hilltoppers (34-21) and Hairston tripled to right centerfield to drive in a run. DEREK RAMOS followed with a RBI single and two batters later, BLAKE HOLUB's sacrifice fly plated Ramos, tying the game at seven. Davis went on to retire the next 10 consecutive batters, but back-to-back Mavericks' doubles helped them escape the Hilltoppers' comeback. Holub received the start on the mound but received no decision after tossing 4.2 innings where he struck out three and walked one batter. Davis was charged the loss to move to 3-4 on the year.

CMU scored first in the second inning with a two RBI triple from Johnny Carr, but SEU evened the score in the fourth thanks to a two RBI double from Lammons. The Mavericks responded and scored three unearned runs in the bottom half of the frame to reestablish a 5-2 lead. SEU would again score two runs courtesy of a two-run shot from Hairston in the fifth, but the Mavericks answered with runs in the fifth and sixth stanzas to extend their lead to 7-4 heading to the seventh inning.
