Box Score VICTORIA, Texas – The reigning Heartland Conference Hitter of the Week,
DYLAN WATTS continued his torrid hitting on Wednesday evening as he drove in three runs to lead the #10 St. Edward's baseball team to a 5-3 victory over UH-Victoria at Riverside Park.
St. Edward's, fresh off a four-game sweep of Colorado Christian this past weekend, started the game off right with a run in the first inning. With two runners in scoring position, Watts singled home
CUTTER RUNTE, who led off the game with a single.
UH-Victoria (5-10) answered the run in the bottom of the first when Dylan Blaha scored on a double steal. The Jaguars would take the lead in the fourth inning when Joshua Boothe hit a one-out home run to left field.
The Hilltoppers rallied in the fifth inning.
WES KOENIG reached on a single to centerfield and moved to second on an error by the centerfielder. He moved to third on a fly out by
RANSOM LALONDE. Watts stepped in next and found the gap in right centerfield to plate Koenig. After moving to third base on a Jaguar error, Watts would score on a double steal to give St. Edward's a 3-2 lead.
UH-Victoria fought back once again in the bottom of the fifth inning when they would score an unearned run to tie the score, 3-3.
In the eighth inning,
CHRIS KILLEEN led off with a walk. He would eventually come around to score on a Jaguar error with two outs to give the Hilltopper the lead for good, 4-3.
Runte led off the ninth inning with a single for his fourth hit of the game. After a single from Koenig put two runners on, a fielder's choice placed runners at first and third. Watts put down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Runte with an insurance run.
DAN BECKS, who came on to start the eighth inning ran into some trouble in the bottom of the ninth. The Jaguars got the leadoff batter on with a single and after a Hilltopper error; UH-Victoria had runners at second and third with just one out. The Hilltopper closer buckled down and struck out the three and four hole batters to preserve the win. It was Becks' second save of the season as he allowed just one hit, while striking out four in 2.0 innings of work.
CODY ELLERBEE (1-0) picked up the victory after coming on in relief in the fifth inning. Ellerbee allowed one unearned run on one hit, while walking one and striking out four in 3.0 innings of work.
KYLE SEITHEL started the game for St. Edward's and allowed two runs on four hits, while walking two and striking out four in 3.0 innings on the mound.
Both Koenig and Watts had two hits each for the Hilltoppers. Koenig has opened the season on an 11-game hitting streak, while Watts has at least one RBI in his last four contests. During those four games, Watts has 11 RBI.
St. Edward's will be back in action this weekend when they open Heartland Conference play at Oklahoma Christian.
