Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – WES KOENIG was a perfect 5-for-5 on Saturday afternoon at Lucian Hamilton Field to help the Hilltoppers dismantle their rival St. Mary's, 10-2. With the victory, St. Edward's took the series against the Rattlers and are now in first place and in control of hosting the Heartland Conference tournament.
St. Edward's displayed their dominance to the large home crowd during the first inning. St. Edward's scored five runs on five hits in the first inning to take the early 5-0 lead.
CUTTER RUNTE singled up the middle and then stole second to advance to scoring position.
GABLE WHITACRE laid down the perfect bunt to get on base and help Runte advance to third. Runte scored when
WES KOENIG singled to left field.
RANSOM LALONDE put down the sacrifice bunt to advance Koenig and Whitacre.
DYLAN WATTS then drew the walk to load the bases with one out.
KEVIN MAYO doubled to right center bringing in Koenig and Whitacre for the 3-0 lead.
CHRIS KILLEEN provided the sacrifice fly to center field to allow Watts to score for the 4-0 lead.
MILES WRIGHT had the final hit of the inning with a single up the middle to allow Mayo to cross home for the 5-0 lead after one inning.
St. Edward's added another run to its total in the second inning. Runte was hit by a pitch to start the inning and advanced to second on a SAC bunt by Whitacre. Koenig singled down the left field line to allow Runte to score the sixth run for the Hilltoppers.
DALTON BROWN took care of the Rattler batters early and often only allowing four hits through the first five innings. St. Mary's scored their first run of the game in the fifth inning, trimming the margin to 6-1.
The Hilltoppers got that run back courtesy of
WES KOENIG in the fifth inning. On the third pitch of the inning he homered to right center field. St. Edward's had another hit in the inning and left two stranded.
The Hilltoppers had another big inning in the sixth frame scoring three runs on three hits. The first two pitches of the inning served as outs for St. Edward's, but a two out rally that started via a
WES KOENIG single pushed the St. Edward's lead to 10-1.
The Hilltoppers had two opportunities to end the game early in the seventh and eighth inning, but couldn't get the 11
th run to force the run rule. St. Mary's scored their second run of the game late in the ninth inning, but it was too little too late as
CAM HATCH forced the final out of the game and St. Edward's beat rival St. Mary's, 10-2
The Hilltoppers will be back in action on April 17
th as they travel to Goodwell, Okla. for a double-header against Panhandle State. First-pitch is set for 12 p.m. Live video and stats will be available on the Aggie Athletic Website.
