Hilltoppers end regular season in dramatic fashion

BB Walk-off
Box Score AUSTIN, TEXAS – Much like the first two games of the series between McMurry and #7 St. Edward's, pitching dominated the day. It took a squeeze bunt from RYAN DOLEZAL to score RANSOM LALONDE from third base in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Hilltoppers a 3-2 walk-off win over the War Hawks.

St. Edward's (36-13, 23-7 HC) struck first, pushing across a run in the third inning. MILES WRIGHT picked up the RBI with a sacrifice fly.

McMurry (23-26, 13-16 HC) answered in the top of the fifth inning with a run of its own. With runners on first and second and one out, St. Edward's failed to turn a double play and the relay throw went over the first baseman's head to plate the runner from second. That knotted the score, 1-1.

The Hilltoppers regained the lead in the sixth inning when CUTTER RUNTE scored on a squeeze bunt by LaLonde.

The War Hawks tied things up again in the seventh inning on a two-out RBI-single.

Over the next three innings, both teams would threaten, but neither could break through as the game went to extra innings. After Hilltoppers closer DAN BECKS set the War Hawks down in order in the top of the 11th inning, LaLonde led off the bottom of the inning with a single down the left field line. On a perfectly executed hit-and-run, DYLAN WATTS advanced LaLonde to third on a single to right field. After a strikeout, that set the stage for the Doelzal. On a 1-0 pitch, Dolezal placed a spot-on bunt up the first base line and LaLonde slid into home for the winning run.

C.J. Manning paced the offense with two hits, while the Hilltopper pitching staff allowed just two earned runs, scattering 14 hits. During the series, St. Edward's allowed just the two earned runs in 27 innings of work. That lowered its conference-best ERA to 2.16 and batting average against to a measly .205. The 2.16 ERA leads the nation in that category.
