AUSTIN, Texas –
J.D. ARROWOOD hit his ninth home run of the year en route to a 6-2 victory over Rogers State as St. Edward's Baseball completed a series sweep of the Hillcats on Friday afternoon.
The home run ties Arrowood for the Heartland Conference lead in that category. He finished the game 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI.
ROMEO CORTINA also went 2-for-4 with a double and one run scored.
KEVIN MAYO rounded out the multiple-hit performances, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
On the mound,
STUART SPRINGER had a shortened outing, lasting 5.2 innings, but still earned the win and moved to 6-0. The transfer from Virginia Tech gave up no runs on five hits, two walks and struck out three. A platoon of Hilltoppers combined for the hold.
St. Edward's is now riding a seven-game win streak as it improves to 23-7 overall and 7-2 in the league. Rogers State falls to 16-11 and 3-6.
"This is the goal every weekend, but it's hard to attain," said head coach Rob Penders. "It always feels good when you get a sweep. This one was nice to have at home, especially rolling into next weekend, which is a big one."
Scoring in the game got under way in the bottom of the second, when the Hilltoppers grabbed a quick, 2-0 lead.
GABLE WHITACRE hit a double down the left-field line to score Cortina. Mayo followed up with a single to bring in Whitacre.
St. Edward's grabbed two more in the fourth to make it 4-0. The pair of runs came off the bat of Mayo who singled to left field to score
DYLAN WATTS, and then ran into a pickle, which allowed Lerick to come home as well.
Arrowood's two-run shot came in the very next inning, scoring
JOSEPH OLSON on the play. The insurance would be enough as Rogers State could only manage a run in the seventh, and another in the ninth on the way to a failed comeback effort.
Coach Penders and his team remain at home for a series against nationally-ranked Lubbock Christian next Friday and Saturday. The three-game set will start with a doubleheader on Friday at 1:30 p.m., followed by a nine-inning game on Saturday at 1 p.m. Fans can follow live video and stats online at GoHilltoppers.com.
