AUSTIN, Texas – Just one week after becoming the Hilltoppers' all-time leader in strikeouts, starting pitcher
COLLIN SHERROD set the record for career wins as St. Edward's Baseball rolled passed Long Island University Post (LIU Post), 12-2 on Friday afternoon.
Sherrod pitched seven innings with five strikeouts, and surrendered one run on six hits and a walk on his way to career win No. 28. The senior now owns an earned-run average of 1.00 this season, and is also in position to take over as the program's leader in starts and innings pitched.
At the plate, all nine starters in the Hilltoppers' batting order recorded a run or RBI, and eight more made a plate appearance in the win. St. Edward's top performers in the offensive outburst included
NICK LERICK,
JOSEPH OLSON,
J.D. ARROWOOD, and
NATE TURNER. Lerick went 3-for-4 from the designated hitter spot with a run and three RBI. Olson cashed in on two hits in three at bats with a pair of runs, and a RBI. Arrowood had one hit, but it was a two-run double. He also scored two runs. Turner capped off the multi-hit performances with a 2-for-3 effort and two runs scored.
The Hilltoppers are currently in the midst of a nine-game winning streak as they improve to 11-3 overall. LIU Post drops to 0-5 with three more games to play this weekend.
"It's great to start the weekend like this. We don't play during the week, and you're always apprehensive about when the weekend starts because you haven't played in a while," said head coach Rob Penders. "It was good to see the bats come alive against a good pitcher who I'm sure we'll probably see again on Sunday. It was nice to get it going early with the bats, and hopefully we'll keep it going through the weekend."
A huge first inning was all it really took for the home team. After a 1-2-3 top half,
GABLE WHITACRE showed patience at the plate and drew a leadoff walk. The Pioneers committed a fielding error that put Olson on first, and Arrowood smacked a double to the right-field corner, giving St. Edward's a 2-0 lead. However, it didn't stop there.
ROMEO CORTINA drew the second walk of the inning, and Lerick smoked an infield single to load the bases.
WESLEY HARRIS singled to center and scored Arrowood. Then, a sacrifice fly from
DYLAN WATTS made it 4-0.
KEVIN MAYO made it back-to-back sacrifice flies, playing Lerick, and a single from Turner put runners on second and third. Whitacre's second time around the order resulted in a triple, capping the scoring at 7-0.
LIU Post wiped away any shutout hopes in the fourth with one run on one hit, but St. Edward's responded in the bottom half. An additional three runs on three hits in the fourth made it 10-1. The home squad collected a run in the sixth, and another in the ninth for the final result.
As a team, the Hilltoppers went 12-of-35 at the plate to increase their combined season average to .299. They are also slugging a combined .466. St. Edward's pitchers own a staff earned-run average of 1.82.
The series with LIU Post continues on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon. The first game will be seven innings, with the second contest going a full nine. Live stats and video will be available at GoHilltoppers.com. Fans can also follow the team on Twitter at @SEUBaseball.
