A 1983 graduate, he served the St. Edward’s baseball team as both catcher and third baseman en route to his three varsity letters. The team’s Most Valuable Player in 1980 and 1982, he was named first-team all-conference the same years. He received an NAIA All-District honorable mention in 1980 and was named to the first-team in 1982, the same year he was NAIA District IV Player of the Year and NAIA Honorable Mention All-American. He is in the Top 10 of all-time SEU single season hitting stats (in seven categories) and in career hitting stats. He holds the SEU record for walks in a season (51); fourth in career batting average (.386); seventh in career runs batted in (143); tied for fifth in career home runs (37); and tied for seventh in career total bases (318). Thames currently lives in Hanahan, S.C. with his wife Debra and he is a special education teacher and coach at Battle Creek Centennial High School.
