St. Edward's Athletics Hall of Fame
A 1972 graduate, he not only lettered in tennis for four years – but in academics as well, earning a place on the Dean’s List for eight semesters. In addition to playing number one doubles for four years, Richard played number two singles for three years before being seeded number one his senior year. Captain and Most Valuable Player of the tennis team in 1971 and 1972, Richard was Big State Conference Champion in both singles and doubles in 1972 – the first year St. Edward’s had a perfect 36 out of 36 points in conference play. Richard was the first recipient of the Emmett Strohmeyer Most Valuable Player Award in 1972 and has the distinction of having an award named after him: The Poppe Sportsmanship Award. A charter member of the Theta Omega Chapter of the Delta Sigma Pi Fraternity, Richard now lives in Las Vegas, Nev., where he works as a realtor. He is the father of one son, Schuyler.
