John Kleinow was one of the many outstanding student-athletes who played for Billy Disch during his first year at St. Edward’s University in 1901. The 1901 Echo stated: “Who would have thought at the opening of the season that from the raw material we had to work with, a team would be developed that would put up a fight with the best college teams in the State.” It continues, “Each man on the team deserves untainted praise for the unfading interest manifested throughout the season.” John Kleinow helped St. Edward’s University win eight out of the 10 games played. Brother William Dunn’s book states that although Kleinow batted .439, he was “hitting them over the fence” two years later for the Toledo Mudhens. A year later, Kleinow went to New York to play for Clark Griffith and the Yankees. He remained with the Yankees until 1910, when he left to play for the Red Sox. Kleinow finished his major league career with the Philadelphia Phillies.
