Russell Sterns was a two-year letterwinner, Heart of Texas Conference Singles Champion (1985), and member of HOTC championship teams (1983, 1985) for legendary SEU Coach Br. Emmett Strohmeyer. In 1988, Sterns followed in his coach’s footsteps as he took over the head coaching reigns. During his 27 seasons at the helm, Sterns compiled 460 victories between the men’s and women’s teams, 18 conference championships, and 27 postseason appearances. He also coached 164 all-conference selections, 25 all-region performers, and 25 all-Americans (1 All-American, 24 Academic All-Americans). He led his teams to four appearances in the NCAA DII Sweet 16 and three more spots in the NCAA DII Elite Eight. He was named conference coach of the year 14 times and regional coach of the year twice.
