St. Edward's Athletics Hall of Fame
The SEU men's and women's soccer programs have been perennial-powerhouses in Division II and they were berthed from the efforts of Mike Smith. Smith started out as the men's coach in 1987 and started the women's program in 1990, coaching both until the 2003 season. He posted a career record of 175-135-27 (.559) with the men's team and a women's career record of 74-71-7 (.510).
Smith took his men's team to SEU's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 1999 after a 16-2-1 overall record and Heartland Conference championship. Smith led the Hilltoppers to a pair of Heartland Conference championships in 1998 and '99, and a Heart of Texas Tournament title in 1993, while making four NAIA district playoff appearances (1990, '92, '93, '96) and winning one NAIA district championship in 1992.
A three-time conference coach of the year honoree, Smith led the women's program to three postseason appearances and one regional appearance.
